Calculate My Birth ChartFrequently Asked Questions
What is a birth chart (natal chart)?
A birth chart is a map of where the Sun, Moon, and planets were positioned in the sky at the exact date, time, and place you were born. Astrologers use this map to explore personality traits, emotional patterns, and life themes - think of it as a snapshot of the sky turned into a personal profile.
How accurate is this birth chart calculator?
AstroVeda calculates planetary positions using the same astronomical data (ephemeris) that professional astrology software relies on, computed to the minute for your exact birth date, time, and location. The calculations are precise - how you choose to interpret them is, as with any astrology, a personal matter.
Do I need to know my exact birth time?
For the most complete chart - including your houses, Ascendant (Rising sign), and Midheaven - yes, an exact birth time is needed, since these shift roughly every few minutes. Your Sun and Moon signs, however, are usually accurate even with an approximate time, unless you were born very close to a sign change.
What if I don't know my birth time?
Check the 'I don't know my exact birth time' box and we'll calculate your chart using 12:00 PM as a placeholder. We'll still show your planets and their zodiac signs, but we'll hide your houses, Ascendant, and Midheaven, since those require a precise time to be meaningful.
What's the difference between my Sun, Moon, and Rising sign?
Your Sun sign reflects your core identity and is what most horoscopes refer to. Your Moon sign relates to your emotional inner world and instincts. Your Rising sign (Ascendant) describes how you tend to come across to others and your general approach to new situations. Together, these three are often called your 'Big Three.'
What house system does AstroVeda use?
AstroVeda uses the Placidus house system, one of the most widely used systems in modern astrology, when your birth time is known. If your birth time is unknown, houses can't be reliably calculated, so they're hidden from your results entirely rather than shown with a guessed time.
What are aspects in astrology?
Aspects are the angles formed between two planets in your chart, such as a 90-degree square or a 120-degree trine. Different angles are traditionally associated with different kinds of relationships between the energies involved - some considered more harmonious, others more challenging or dynamic. AstroVeda calculates the major aspects and shows them with their orb (how exact the angle is).
Is my birth data stored or shared anywhere?
No. All chart calculations happen directly in your browser - your birth date, time, and location are never sent to or stored on our servers. The only outside request made is a location lookup (to convert the city you type into coordinates), which is sent to OpenStreetMap's free geocoding service.
Can I save or share my chart?
Yes. Once your chart is generated, you can download your chart wheel as a PNG image to keep or share, or copy a short text summary of your Big Three signs to paste anywhere you like.
Is AstroVeda free to use?
Yes, completely. AstroVeda is free to use with no account, sign-up, or payment required. The site is supported by advertising, which helps keep the calculator and all of its content freely available.
