The 12 Astrological Houses

Where zodiac signs describe how you express yourself, and planets describe what part of your psyche is in play, the twelve astrological houses describe where in your life these energies tend to show up. Each house corresponds to a different area of everyday experience - identity, money, communication, home, relationships, career, and more - and together they map your birth chart onto the actual landscape of a life.

Houses are calculated using your birth time and location, because they're based on the rotation of the Earth - specifically, which part of the zodiac was rising on the eastern horizon (your 1st house cusp) at the moment you were born. This is why an accurate birth time matters so much for chart reading: get it wrong, and the houses can shift enough to change which life areas your placements actually highlight.

Every planet in your chart falls into one of these twelve houses, and the cusp of each house falls in a zodiac sign of its own - adding yet another layer of detail to your chart. Below, you'll find the houses grouped by their general “quality” (angular, succedent, and cadent), followed by a full guide to all twelve. If you haven't yet, calculate your free birth chart to see where these houses fall for you.

Angular, Succedent & Cadent Houses

Beyond their individual meanings, the twelve houses also fall into three groups of four, based on their position relative to the four angles of the chart (the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, and Imum Coeli). This grouping describes a house's general “quality” - how directly and immediately its themes tend to show up.

Angular - 1, 4, 7 and 10

The angular houses sit at the four cardinal points of the chart and are considered the most prominent. Planets placed here tend to have an outsized influence, expressing themselves through visible, initiating action.

Succedent - 2, 5, 8 and 11

The succedent houses follow each angular house and relate to resources, stability, and follow-through - building, securing, and sustaining what the angular houses set in motion.

Cadent - 3, 6, 9 and 12

The cadent houses precede each angular house and relate to learning, adjustment, and processing - gathering information and preparing for the next cycle to begin.
