The 12 Zodiac Signs
The zodiac is a 360-degree band of sky, divided into twelve equal slices of 30 degrees each. Each slice is one of the zodiac signs you probably already know by name - Aries through Pisces - and together they form the backdrop against which the Sun, Moon, and planets all travel.
When most people talk about “their sign,” they mean their Sun sign: the slice of the zodiac the Sun was passing through on the day they were born. But your Sun sign is only one placement in a much larger picture. Every planet in your birth chart - the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the rest - falls in one of these twelve signs too, and each placement adds its own layer to who you are. Your Moon sign colors your emotional instincts, your Rising sign shapes how you come across to others, and so on.
Each sign also carries two layers of meaning that show up throughout this guide and the rest of AstroVeda: an element (Fire, Earth, Air, or Water) that describes its core temperament, and a modality (Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable) that describes how it handles change. Together, these layers explain why two signs can feel so different even when they share an element or a modality.
Below, you'll find a quick overview of elements and modalities, followed by a guide to all twelve signs - their dates, symbols, ruling planets, and what each one tends to look like in a real chart. If you'd like to see exactly where these signs fall in your own birth chart, calculate your free natal chart and explore your placements alongside these guides.
The Four Elements
Every sign belongs to one of four elements, which describe its underlying temperament. Elements group the zodiac into four families of three signs each, spaced evenly around the wheel, and they're often the fastest way to get a feel for a sign's core energy.
Fire - Aries, Leo and Sagittarius
Fire signs act on instinct and run on enthusiasm. They're driven by what excites them, comfortable taking risks, and quick to turn an idea into motion. When fire is strong in a chart, it tends to show up as confidence, spontaneity, and a need for purpose and challenge.
Earth - Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn
Earth signs are grounded in the tangible - what can be seen, touched, built, and relied upon. They value stability, results, and follow-through. A strong earth presence in a chart often brings patience, practicality, and a steady hand for turning plans into something real.
Air - Gemini, Libra and Aquarius
Air signs live in the realm of ideas, conversation, and connection. They're naturally curious, sociable, and drawn to understanding how things - and people - work. Strong air energy often shows up as quick thinking, adaptability, and a genuine love of exchanging perspectives.
The Three Modalities
Each sign also carries a modality - Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable - that describes how it responds to change. The twelve signs split evenly into three modality groups of four signs each, one from every element, and modality often shapes how a placement actually behaves day to day.
Cardinal - Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn
Cardinal signs sit at the start of each season and carry initiating energy - they're the ones who get things moving. A strong cardinal presence often shows up as leadership, decisiveness, and comfort starting new projects, relationships, or chapters before all the details are worked out.
Fixed - Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius
Fixed signs fall in the middle of each season and bring stability, follow-through, and staying power. Once a fixed-sign placement commits to something - a goal, a relationship, a belief - it tends to hold steady long after the initial excitement fades.
Mutable - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces
Mutable signs close out each season and bring flexibility, adaptability, and a talent for transition. A strong mutable presence often shows up as open-mindedness and the ability to juggle multiple things at once, comfortable with change that might unsettle more fixed temperaments.

Reading about zodiac signs in the abstract is interesting, but astrology gets a lot more useful - and a lot more fun - once you can see exactly where these signs land in your own birth chart. Your Sun sign is just the beginning: your Moon, Rising, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and every other point in your chart each fall in one of these twelve signs, often telling a more nuanced story than your Sun sign alone.
